Virtual Commencement at SDSS – June 24, 2020

Virtual Commencement at SDSS

The safety of students and staff is paramount and is the main consideration for ensuring the overall success of this event. Please read the following instructions in its entirety so that you have an understanding of the expectations and directions which need to be followed by everyone involved.

Students have been scheduled alphabetically in groups to ensure that physical distancing can be maintained. The schedule has been emailed to parents/guardians and students. Be sure that you arrive at your assigned time at least 15 minutes prior to the indicated time. If you are late, we will try to accommodate, but you may need to wait until you can be safely slotted into a group.

The date and venue of the virtual commencement ceremony is Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at South Delta Secondary School (see directions below). Upon arrival, students should stay in their vehicles and exit one at a time when at the front of the line. After drop-off, drivers should continue to the SDSS north parking lot and remain in their vehicles to wait for their graduate. Students will receive instructions upon arrival for marshalling through the entire event. Each group has been scheduled in 30 minute intervals and we will do our best to keep to this time frame. When finished, students will exit through the north exit and should proceed immediately to their vehicles. The congregating of groups will be strictly monitored and you are encouraged to leave the parking area immediately.

As this is a school sanctioned event, all school rules apply for everyone’s safety.

Thank you for your attention to these instructions to ensure a safe and orderly implementation of this commencement event.

Directions to South Delta Secondary School:

From BC Highway 17, turn left at 56 Street and proceed southbound to 6th Avenue.
Turn right and continue westbound to 53A Street.
Then turn north (right) and start lining up in the curb lane after Spetifore Crescent, adjacent to the SDSS track.

What is Dry Grad?

Dry Grad is an event which provides students with a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment to celebrate their graduation. It is a fully supervised fun event, sponsored by the Parents, where the grads can party with their friends, be entertained and participate in a fun-filled, action-packed night of celebration.

When is it?

Grads will be taken from the hotel to the Rec Centre by bus with Grade 11 Parent chaperones and from then on will be the Grad Committees responsibility with help from current Grade 11 parents who will supervise the Dry Grad overnight .

The Dry Grad will begin at 10.30pm and will end at 4am
There are no in and out priviledges at the Dry Grad . We have security organized and parents will be called to collect any Grad who is under the influence of alcohol or anything else . Obviously we trust this will not be necessary.

At the end Grads must be picked up by a parent or another Grads parent. No one will be allowed to leave alone. Again this is to ensure you get home safely.

Who is organizing this event?

PARENTS of the graduating class are the primary organizers however they welcome volunteers from the Grade 11 class as well. There are a number of committees who still need volunteers and there is definitely a job that suits every parent.
